Webhosting Email Accounts Question
  • It’s not too bad. Take a look at iredmail- free version makes it very easy. https://www.iredmail.org/
But even just setting up dovecot/postfix/etc manually ain’t too bad. There are a ton of guides out there. Just google “set up own Linux email server”.

  • honestly i've found self-hosting email beyond "HEY HERE IS YOUR PASSWORD" to be an utter pain. even then, mail sent directly from servers often gets pre-preemptively flagged as spam causing users to completely miss it.

i'm not the smartest or most technically competent person in the world, but I ran into a lot of issues with just base configuration, before any sort of spam filtering and such... at the end of the day i had wished i just used google suite from the start for any interactive email, and some email-over-http-api service for automated outgoing mail

  • Cool, I'll check out iredmail. I've seen many guides online and they seem simple enough to establish on your own server, but I've read many stories about emails being flagged randomly and not being delivered for no reaso. Maintaining and keeping this up to date on hundreds of clients is out of the question.

Do you own a hosting company and set this all up manually for a lot of clients? I'm really interested in a solution that has been proven to scale with the number of clients. It seems the only solution may be a paid third party.

  • Yeah I mean with third party really what you’re paying for is piece of mind, convenience and to have time to do other shit. It’s doable yourself at whatever scale. Just use smart configs and follow the rules (dkim and everything else) and it’ll work. There’ll be problems but you work to minimize them. If you don’t want to worry or want time for other things, pay someone. $4-6/user is about the going rate these days. I use office 365 now because they make compliance and security easier.

  • Oh cool, I'll look into o365 too. I'm looking to be a Zoho partner but they've been sitting on my application for a while now, not sure if it's going to happen. Thanks for your input!

  • Np. O364 has its issues as does any service but it’s been pretty good tbh. I used to despise ms but they’ve been doing ite as of recent. It’s also nice cuz it can handle so many things including phones and it’s all integrated pretty well.
