Recently I decided to check on the (now mostly inactive) site and was presented with this message in my mailbox.
The user, while hostile in tone, made a few fair points.
You can say all you want about how you will protect the user's privacy when in reality every single piece of technology is already tracking you in some way, whether you like it or not.
Correct, your phone is still tracking you, your ISP is tracking you, but these are not factors I can control. On ieddit, there is no user tracking/analytics/etc and all server logs are deleted after 2 weeks. I very intentionally designed the site to be able to be used in a javascript disabled tor browser, even though it made things more difficult.
The website is behind cloudflare (set to minimum security settings) which is unfortunately required but other than that, use tor and disable JS and you will be able to use ieddit with more privacy than any other platform.
Allowing people to say the word "nigger" wasn't the point of ieddit, voat already exists for that. Ieddit was meant to provide a non-profit, user-focused alternative to reddit which operated with full transparency, without ever being at risk of compromising our users in the name of profit.
It's a combination of government authoritarianism and pursuit for endless profits that have left the internet in the sorry state it is in currently. The internet itself is still healthy in places such as wikipedia for example, which was a model this site was founded off of. The government surveillance we are all victim to is not yet all-encompassing, and can be actively resisted (use signal instead of sms, tor browser/logless vpn such as mullvad, etc).
The fight for the internet is not over yet. I've been extremely busy lately trying to survive as a wagecuck, but once an opportunity presents itself, I'll once again throw myself into the arena and try to revive this place. Or maybe start fresh, with a non-clone name, and an actual non-profit organization behind development properly setup now that I'm not completely broke.
