Unrelated: just noticed that up/down votes negate each other. If 10 downs negate 10 ups, it appears as 0, same value as a post with... 0 votes/interest.

correct. the hot/new/top sorting only takes into account algorithmic/total score, and date.

i could add a controversial sort to place emphasis on number of ups/downs, and not just total
