Subs only appear in the "Explore" page after they have posts.

  • So this is intended behaviour.

The reason it is configured this way is a MASSIVE amount of subs have 0 posts, 0 comments, as a result of people trying to create as many subs as possible.

You can make a post, any post, and delete it, and it will show up in /explore/ once the cache has been cleared (cache defaults to 10 minutes, so 10 minutes at most).

Most pages aren't cached, but the /explore/ page and the get_subs endpoint used when filling the sub selection dropdown on posts are cached due to the large amount of records that are returned.

Fair enough. Thanks for the tip!
